I want Capistrano Mazda to share with me what information about me they collect.

When purchasing a new or used vehicle (or attempting to), Capistrano Mazda collects significant amounts of personal information so that we can arrange DMV services, financing, manufacturer registration, warranty, and other services on your behalf. Personal information needed for these services is obtained via information provided by you at time of transaction and varies by what goods and services are being exchanged (sales, service, parts, etc.). As an automotive retailer in California, we have robust legal and governmental retention requirements that make it necessary to safeguard this information for some period and at the end of such time, make every effort to properly destroy/dispose of the information. I want Capistrano Mazda to delete my information (formal CCPA request).

In 2018, California became the first U.S. state to enact a comprehensive consumer privacy law called the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) which grants residents new rights regarding their personal information. Those rights include (among other things) notice, portability, deletion, and opting out of information selling.

 
To fulfill a CCPA request, please note the following disclosures for the request to be made:

  • In order to continue to protect your personal information, we will need to verify your identity (with multiple forms of identification). This may require in-person visits or notarized documentation and certified mail services.
  • You’ll also need to establish that you are (or were) a California resident.
  • In order to best serve your needs, please clearly articulate the manner of your request and specify what actions if necessary, we will need to take (notice, portability, deletion, and/or opting out) to comply with the request.
  • It’s important to note that in many instances, there are exceptions to the deletion right if there are applicable record retention requirements that require business to maintain the data for certain periods of time. Therefore, complete deletion may be unavailable at the time of request depending on when the data was generated and the timing of the request (CCPA requests currently pertain to data one year old and newer).
  • Also note that special laws outside of CCPA guidelines also outline that a manufacturer may still contact you regarding vehicle warranty and recall repairs.
