If you're considering buying a Mazda Miata, you more than likely already have an idea of the fun you can have behind the wheel of this compact sports car. The Miata comes with an attitude of its own that exudes fun and freedom, and taking control of this iconic roadster automatically puts you in the same state of mind. Aside from this car's fun sense of style, it also includes an array of features both under the hood and inside the cabin that are sure to impress.
We think the Miata is especially well-suited for drivers in Orange County. There's no better place in the country to cruise with the top down than southern California, an area where drivers of convertibles can take advantage of cool breezes year-round. Mazdas are award-winning vehicles that deserve a closer look, so let's take a glimpse into why the Miata is the perfect car for you to drive home.
The Mazda Miata comes in five different trim levels: Sport, Club, Grand Touring, Grand Touring RF, and Club RF. While all five trim levels are convertibles, the trim levels featuring “RF” behind their names feature a “retractable fastback” hardtop roof rather than a cloth top. No matter which trim level you choose, you'll be treated to a two-seater sports car that's just as much fun to drive as it looks. Compact and easy to maneuver, all trim levels feature exceptional handling and a peppy engine that's ready to tackle the open roads.
The base trim level starts the lineup by providing a solid offering of standard features while avoiding the luxurious extras that drive up the price sticker. For starters, the Sport trim level features 16-inch black alloy wheels with high-performance tires, LED headlights and taillights, and a black manual convertible top. Keyless entry and a push-button start come standard here, as does a leather-wrapped steering wheel, shift knob, and parking brake. Cloth seats adorn the interior, and a 7-inch touch-screen infotainment system integrates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto into a six-speaker audio system.
Standard driver-assistance features include cruise control, forward collision mitigation, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning, and lane departure warning.
If you're looking for the sportiest trim level, the Club would be your best choice. The wheels on the Club trim level are upgraded to 17-inch black alloy, and a sport-tuned suspension system with Bilstein shock absorbers helps enhance this trim level's ride. You'll also find this model is equipped with a shock tower brace that improves handling by stiffening the body structure. A limited-slip differential also helps to enhance traction during quick acceleration. A back front lip and rear spoiler add to the sporty aesthetic.
Inside, you'll find an upper door panel trim to match the exterior color, gray contrast-color seat stitching, and heated seats. Connectivity and audio are enhanced with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a satellite radio system, and a nine-speaker Bose audio system.
If these features aren't enough for you, this trim level also has an optional Brembo/BBS Recaro package that includes Brembo front brakes with red front and rear calipers, dark gray forged alloy BBS wheels, an aerodynamic body kit, and heated Recaro sport seats.
The Grand Touring takes many of the sporty features of the Club and adds a few more luxurious touches. Unlike the Club, you won't find the front and rear spoiler on the Grand Touring model. You also have the option of automatic transmission here, but if you choose to go in that direction, you'll lose the Bilstein shock absorbers, limited-slip differential, and shock tower brace.
However, choosing the Grand Touring trim level includes a vast selection of upscale features, including automatic headlights with automatic high-beam assist, adaptive headlights that turn with your steering wheel to better illuminate curves, and automatic rain-sensing windshield wipers. Heated side mirrors with auto-dimming driver's side glass and an auto-dimming rearview mirror are also standard features. Automatic climate control keeps you and your passengers comfortable at all times. Leather upholstery replaces cloth, and a navigation system and road-sign recognition round out the more enhanced features.
If you choose either of the trim levels with “RF” in its name, you'll enjoy the same basic features outlined in the trim levels above. However, instead of the standard cloth-top convertible, the RF models feature a metallic hard-top roof that retracts into the rear of the vehicle. Because the metallic roof needs more support, metal pillars will still be in place on each side of the vehicle even after the roof is retracted, giving it a slightly different look when it's in its open-air form.
No matter which Miata you select, you'll find the same engine under the hood of every model. A 181-horsepower four-cylinder engine paired with rear-wheel drive provides quick, smooth acceleration and more than enough power to move this compact car efficiently. Manual transmission comes standard on the Miata, which feels like a throwback to the sports cars of days past. While automatic transmission is available on several trim levels, the manual transmission is easy to shift, and many drivers think it creates a better driving experience.
The Mazda Miata has commendable fuel efficiency, a feature that's directly related to the car's compact design. Drivers can expect around 26 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. If you opt for the automatic transmission, the highway estimate increases to 35 mpg.
The Mazda Miata has the look and feel of a classic sports car, from the smooth teardrop design to the standard manual transmission. This compact car might not be the best choice for long family road trips, but it's exceptionally fun to drive and perfect for a weekend jaunt along the coast. Every CX-90 3.3 Turbo uses the same e-SKYACTIV-G turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Mazda incorporates an electric motor in every CX-90s, so consider this a hybrid powertrain. However, the lower trims use a smaller electric motor called the M Hybrid Boost that does what its name implies and boosts power. The CX-90 models with this powertrain produce 280 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque.
When you reach the Turbo S models, Mazda replaces the M Hybrid Boost motor with a 68-kW AC Synchronous e-SKYACTIV electric motor. This larger electric motor increases power output to 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque.
Mazda used its 2.5-liter e-SKYACTIV-PHEV inline four-cylinder engine and the same AC Synchronous 68-kW electric motor to power the PHEV models. The smaller gas engine offers more efficiency, while the electric motor closes the power gap lost by replacing the inline turbo six-cylinder. As a result, this powertrain makes 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque.
Every CX-90 uses a rear-biased AWD system that transfers power to the tires with the most traction when necessary. The AWD system reverts to rear-wheel drive when it senses traction from all four wheels.
In addition, the CX-90 comes with MI-Drive, an intelligent system with four drive modes. You can choose Normal mode for your usual Orange County commute or Sport mode to dial in your throttle, suspension, and steering systems for a more thrilling drive. You can opt for Off-Road mode when you leave the pavement behind. And Mazda includes a Towing mode to manage loads up to 5,000 pounds.
Every curve and line on the Mazda CX-90 was sculpted to capture the interplay of light and shadow to absorb and reflect the beauty of the world you drive through. Designers took full advantage of the wider, longer wheelbase. An elongated hood accommodates the inline six-cylinder engine, creating a commanding profile and stately presence.
Inside the cabin, you have three rows of seats for up to eight passengers. You can opt for second-row captain's chairs that reduce seating capacity to seven but improve the comfort for second-row passengers. In addition, you can choose a center console for the second row or leave the space empty for additional access to the third row.
Options for Nappa leather upholstery, maple wood, and brushed metal appliques add sophisticated style. And designers use hanging stitches, a technique that creates space and dimension between fabrics for a more refined look. Finally, adding the panoramic moon roof opens up all the light and air on every adventure.
Mazda incorporated the latest must-have technology in the CX-90, and every placement of buttons, knobs, and screens was done with the driver in mind. As a result, you enjoy an intuitive driving experience that filters out distraction and enhances focus. In addition, using facial recognition software, your CX-90 automatically adjusts the driver's seat, steering wheel, and mirrors to your preferred position.
All your infotainment operates on the standard 10.25-inch color touch screen, or you can upgrade to a 12.3-inch display. Wireless Apple CarPlay, Wireless Android Auto, Bluetooth, and the Mazda navigation system come built in for your convenience. Using voice recognition software and intuitive voice commands, you can operate these systems hands-free to make calls, answer texts, get navigation information, and access your favorite apps.
Mazda offers a premium 12-speaker audio system from Bose, a wireless charging pad, and heated and ventilated seats as standard equipment on most models. You also get two USB-C ports in all three rows to keep everyone connected and charged. And you can enroll in Mazda Connected Services to unlock remote operations. For example, using the app on your phone, you can lock or unlock your CX-90, start the engine, set your climate control system, and more.
Mazda equipped every CX-90 with a suite of driver-assist technologies designed to enhance your commute and improve safe driving. The suite includes Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Blind Spot Monitoring, Blind Spot Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist, Emergency Lane Keeping, Hill Launch Assist, Rear View Monitor, and a 360-degree View Monitor with See Through View.
These systems rely on advanced optical sensors, cameras, and radar to scan your CX-90's surroundings and alert you to hazards. You receive visual and audio alerts when a system detects a possible problem. In certain circumstances, these systems can engage steering support and emergency braking to help you mitigate or avoid a crash.
