Exploring the 2025 Mazda CX-30 vs. CX-50

August 22nd, 2025 by

It’s hard to choose between the 2025 Mazda CX-30 and the CX-50. The compact CX-30 shines for city dwellers who need something efficient and easy to park, while the beefier CX-50 works better for families and weekend warriors seeking extra room and capability. Both offer Mazda’s distinctive styling and zippy driving feel, but they’re built for totally different lifestyles. Our team at Capistrano Mazda breaks down the differences in how they drive, what’s inside, and the pricing, so you can determine which one is best for you.

2025 Mazda CX-30 vs Mazda CX-50

What’s New for 2025 in Mazda’s SUV Lineup?

The CX-30 offers a new base-level 2.5 S trim starting at just $25,195. Every CX-30 now comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard, better connected services, and you can get a 360-degree camera system if you want it. A 10.25-inch screen is standard on higher trims.

The CX-50 adds built-in Amazon Alexa, a rear-seat reminder system, and some extra safety tech. You also get wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard and a vehicle exit warning system for when you’re about to open your door into traffic. The CX-50 now includes a hybrid powertrain option that pairs a 2.5-liter engine with an electric motor for 219 horsepower and a 0-to-60 mph time of 7.6 seconds.

Performance and Engine Specifications

The CX-30 comes with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder making 191 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. The Mazda CX-50’s engine is nearly identical on paper — a 2.5-liter four-cylinder putting out 187 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque. Both offer turbo options: the CX-30’s turbo cranks out 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque on regular gas, jumping to 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft if you use premium fuel.

The CX-50’s turbo engine edges ahead slightly with 256 horsepower and 320 lb-ft on premium fuel. Towing is where you’ll spot the biggest practical difference — the CX-50 can pull 2,000 pounds with the base engine, a solid 3,500 pounds with the turbo, and 1,500 pounds with the hybrid, all when properly equipped. The CX-30 doesn’t have an official tow rating from the manufacturer.

The CX-30 zips around corners with that quick, agile feel that makes city driving and tight parking spots a breeze. The CX-50 trades some of that nimbleness for a planted, confident feel on rough roads and light trails, just right for camping or a weekend getaway.

Interior and Comfort: Space, Features, and Quality

The CX-30 is 173 inches long, 70.7 inches wide, and 61.7 inches tall with 8 inches of ground clearance. The CX-50 is substantially bigger at 185.8 inches long, 72.9 inches wide, and 63.5 inches high with up to 8.6 inches of ground clearance. Inside, the CX-30 gives you 37.8 inches of front headroom and 36.3 inches of rear-seat legroom, while the CX-50 offers 39.1 inches of headroom up front and a much roomier 39.8 inches of legroom in back, a huge difference if you regularly travel with adults or teenagers.

The CX-30 has 20.2 cubic feet of cargo space with the seats up and 45.2 cubic feet total, but the seats don’t fold totally flat. The CX-50 surpasses that with 31.4 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 56.3 cubic feet with them folded. Overall, the CX-50’s cabin gives you over 100 cubic feet of passenger space versus just 94.1 in the CX-30.

Tech setup differs, too. The CX-30 comes with an 8.8-inch display standard. The CX-50 ups the ante with a 10.25-inch touch screen on all trims, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto built in. You’ll also find thoughtful touches such as ventilated front seats, power seats, and a panoramic sunroof that make road trips much more pleasant.

Price and Fuel Economy

Your wallet will notice the difference between these two great SUVs. The 2025 CX-30 has an MSRP of $37,150 for the fancy Turbo Premium Plus trim. The CX-50 starts at $30,500 for the 2.5 S Select and climbs to $43,500 for a loaded Turbo Premium Plus. Price might be the deciding factor if you’re still unsure which model is for you.

Gas mileage shows some variation as well. The standard CX-30 achieves 26 mpg in the city, 33 mpg on the highway, and 29 mpg combined, while the turbo engine drops the mileage to 22/30/25 mpg. The bigger Mazda CX-50’s gas mileage isn’t far behind its smaller sibling, hitting 25/31/28 mpg with the base engine. The most efficient of the three is the CX-50 Hybrid, which gets an impressive 38 mpg combined.

Both cars come with the same warranty — three years/36,000 miles for a basic warranty and five years/60,000 miles on the powertrain. If you’re mainly driving in the city and watching your budget, the CX-30 makes more financial sense upfront. But if you drive a lot of miles, that CX-50 Hybrid could be cheaper over time despite costing more initially.

Safety and Reliability: Assurance on the Road

Both SUVs have excellent safety records but with different bragging rights. The CX-50 grabbed the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick+ award for 2025. The CX-30 isn’t far behind — it was named the safest small SUV by U.S. News & World Report with an amazing 9.8/10 safety score. You’ll find the same i-ACTIVSENSE safety package in both, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot warnings.

Reliability tells a different story, though. The CX-30 scores an average of 76 out of 100 from J.D. Power for predicted reliability, and the CX-50 got just 72 out of 100. While both cars will keep you safe in a crash, the CX-30 looks like the better bet for avoiding unexpected repair bills and frustrating dealer visits down the road.

Making Your Choice: Which Mazda SUV Fits Your Lifestyle?

Your choice comes down to your daily life and what you value most. If you live in the city, want to save money up front, and care about established reliability, the CX-30 is the best choice. It’s great for people who are single, in a partnership, or have a small family who primarily stick to paved roads and don’t carry a lot of stuff.

If you need more room for kids or cargo, wish to pull a small trailer, appreciate having the latest electronic toys, or enjoy going hiking on the weekends, the CX-50 is the best choice.  It’s built for growing families and outdoor types who need versatility. The hybrid option is a nice bonus if you drive a lot but still want decent fuel economy from a larger vehicle.
