August 9th, 2023 by

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles strike an appealing balance between the cost savings and energy efficiency of electric driving and the convenience of a fuel-powered engine. Today, you can find a wide variety of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles on the market, including full-size, three-row SUVs. Two popular models are the 2024 Mazda CX-90 Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle and the Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle. You might consider one of these SUVs if you’re looking for an electrified vehicle to haul your family around San Juan Capistrano, California, and beyond. Here’s a comparison of their specs and features.

Exterior Appearance

Both the 2024 Mazda CX-90 Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle and the Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle are large SUVs with finely crafted exterior details. The CX-90’s elegant and elongated front end and stylish body lines make it look like a high-end luxury vehicle. Its three trims are the Preferred, Premium, and Premium Plus, and they’re available in up to eight glossy exterior paint colors, with an upgraded offering called Rhodium White Premium.

The Outlander Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle is characterized by its broad, bold grille and horizontal body accents. It has a boxier and more muscular build than the sleek CX-90. Mitsubishi offers the Outlander in five trims: the ES, SE, and SEL, plus the special-edition RALLIART and 40th Anniversary Edition.

Power and Performance

When comparing the CX-90 Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle to the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle, the CX-90 brings more power and a greater driving range than the Outlander. Each CX-90 Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle trim is powered by a 2.5-liter engine and a 68 kW electric motor for a total of 323 horsepower. This powertrain can propel the SUV from zero to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds.

Its intelligent all-wheel-drive system, i-ACTIV AWD, sends power to the wheels that need it most for a safe and more controlled driving experience. Depending on conditions and preferences, you can also choose between four driving modes: EV, Sport, Off-road, and Towing. Speaking of towing, the CX-90 can pull up to 3,500 pounds.

The Outlander Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle features a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors to produce a combined 248 horsepower. Mitsubishi’s version of intelligent all-wheel drive is its S-AWC system that toggles between seven drive modes to maximize control. You can also choose to drive on fully electric power with EV mode, get an extra boost of power with the Series Hybrid mode, or rely primarily on the gas engine in Parallel Hybrid mode. The Outlander Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle can tow a mere 1,500 pounds.

Fuel Efficiency and Driving Range

Both SUVs have similar mileage and driving range figures, allowing you to make your daily commute on electric or hybrid power. The Mazda CX-90 Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle can go approximately 26 miles on all-electric power, with a total driving range of 490 miles. Compare this to the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle’s 38-mile electric range but 420-mile full range. The CX-90’s estimated fuel economy is 25 mpg and 56 MPGe combined, while the Outlander’s is 26 mpg and 64 MPGe combined.

Interior Features

As large SUVs, each of these plug-in hybrid electric vehicles is designed to carry a full house of passengers within its three rows of seating. The base CX-90 trim has the capacity to fit eight, with the higher trims seating seven. All Outlander trims seat seven.

The CX-90 Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle’s interior is just as impressive as its exterior, boasting standard leather-trimmed seating and a leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel. Comfort and convenience features on every trim include keyless entry and push-button start, heated front seats, second-row window shades, a sunroof, and power-adjustable driver and front passenger seats. The top Premium Plus trim gains heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and ventilated front seats.

The Outlander Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle comes standard with cloth seating, power lumbar support for the driver, and a tilt and telescoping steering wheel. You have to upgrade to higher trims to get perks such as an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated and massaging seats, and leather-wrapped appointments and seating.

The CX-90 tops the Outlander when it comes to cargo space. It boasts 14.9 cubic feet behind the third row, 40 cubic feet with the third row folded flat, and 74.2 cubic feet with both the second and third rows folded. The Outlander only gives you 13, 31, and 64 cubic feet of cargo space, respectively.
